Directions

Sexual violence against women has emerged as a salient feature of the war in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Such violence is not only physical, but also inflicts psychological and social pain on the women, their families, and the community. Treating and preventing it are crucial components for peace, stability, and national reconciliation in the Congo.

Dr. Denis Mukwege has helped to lead this effort in South Kivu. He helped found and currently operates the General Referral Hospital of Panzi, in Bukavu. In addition to providing medical care for the population generally, the hospital specializes in the treatment of survivors of sexual violence. As the only physician in South Kivu province to provide this specialized medical treatment, Dr. Mukwege and the hospital face many difficulties.

He will outline the challenges faced by both the survivors and the hospital in addressing the effects of sexual violence and the opportunities available to improve the health of the women and the communities.
