USA Freedom Corps Honors Active Duty Military Personnel with President’s Volunteer Service Award
On May 16, USA Freedom Corps Director Henry Lozano honored seven active-duty members of America’s Armed Forces with the President’s Volunteer Service Award during a White House ceremony, recognizing their outstanding service to others in need. Joined by General James Cartwright, Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; Mary Jo Myers, member of the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation and wife of General Richard Myers; and actor Stephen Baldwin, Director Lozano thanked the awardees from all branches of the military for their service to causes greater than self.

AmeriCorps Week 2008 Highlights
The second annual AmeriCorps Week was a major success! USA Freedom Corps thanks the tens of thousands of AmeriCorps members, alums, staff, partners, and friends who joined in shining the spotlight on the extraordinary service and accomplishments of AmeriCorps and in helping engage more Americans answer the President’s Call to Service. The week featured widespread media coverage, a policy forum and release of a new longitudinal study of the effects of AmeriCorps on its members, and hundreds of events across the country.

Rigorous Longitudinal Study of AmeriCorps Finds Significant Impacts Eight Years Later
AmeriCorps is building a powerful pipeline for public servants, civic leaders, and social entrepreneurs, finds a new longitudinal study released on May 13th. Based on data collected eight years after members completed their year of service, the study conclusively demonstrates that AmeriCorps causes long-term positive impacts on the civic attitudes and behaviors of the program's alumni.

Task Force on New Americans
On May 29 in Houston, Texas, USA Freedom Corps will join the Task Force on New Americans to present President’s Volunteer Service Awards to outstanding volunteers who have worked with new Americans. The Task Force on New Americans was created in June 2006 by President Bush to help immigrants learn English, embrace core American civic culture and fully assimilate into America. USA Freedom Corps partners with the Task Force to promote volunteering among US citizens and newcomers.

Join USA Freedom Corps at the National Conference on Volunteering and Service
More than 4,000 leaders will gather in Atlanta June 1-3, 2008 for the annual National Conference on Volunteering and Service. The conference is the nation’s largest gathering of service and volunteering leaders. Keynote speakers include USA Freedom Corps Director Henry Lozano, Corporation for National and Community Service CEO David Eisner, former Georgia Senator Sam Nunn, former Secretary of Defense William Cohen, Peace Corps Director Ron Tschetter, U.S. Representative John Lewis, and Mayor of Atlanta Shirley Franklin.

President’s Council Member Kasey Kahne Named Official NASCAR Foundation Volunteer Network Spokesperson
Kasey Kahne, and member of the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation and driver of the #9 Budweiser Allstate Dodge in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, will serve as the official spokesperson of the NASCAR Foundation Volunteer Network. The Network was launched in 2006 to help provide an outlet for industry charities to recruit volunteers and to create a centralized location for fans to find volunteer opportunities.

President Bush Recognizes St. Louis Man for Dedication to Volunteer Service
President George W. Bush presented the President’s Volunteer Service Award to Jerron Johnson upon arrival in St. Louis, Missouri, on Friday, May, 2, 2008. Johnson served as a volunteer with AmeriCorps St. Louis and is an active volunteer with Make a Difference Day and the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.
