Estimates of soaring inflation in Zimbabwe reflect circumstances that continue to cripple the country's economic fabric and undermine prospects for peace. In a couple of decades, Zimbabwe has gone from being a regional economic anchor to a potential destabilizing force. The economic decline is mirrored in the political arena, particularly in the wake of recent flawed elections and widespread human rights abuses. However, while stark economic inequity, pervasive deprivation and grinding poverty persist investment flows appear unaffected. In June 2008 Anglo American announced plans to invest a further $400 million in Zimbabwe's platinum mines; Imara's planned investments in the Zimbabwe stock exchange were oversubscribed in May 2008; and London-based Lonhro is planning to invest roughly $66 million this year. This roundtable panel will address the following questions. What are the implications of recent economic trends in Zimbabwe's formal and informal economies? What is the relationship between economic trends and prospects for lasting peace? What policy options are open to domestic and external stakeholders?
