Shante Carney |
Student Service Consortium |
|
Serving with the Student Service Consortium at her alma mater, Eastern Kentucky University, provides AmeriCorps member Shante Carney the chance to practice her teaching skills. She tutors elementary students in reading during the school day, then runs after school programs with fellow AmeriCorps members. The afternoon sessions include math and science, as well as reading. Several times a year, Carney participates in reading events. For Make a Difference Day in the fall, she had 53 uniform-clad student athletes from the university read to all the classes from grade-appropriate, sports-related books before signing autographs for the children. She’s already planning two events for the spring, one on March 2, Dr. Seuss’s birthday, and one on Earth Day. Carney also encourages volunteering throughout the school, inviting guest readers into classes and running a canned food drive that benefited the Salvation Army. Once she completes her second year of AmeriCorps service, Carney plans to use her education awards to start her teaching career by obtaining a master’s in education. With an undergraduate degree in physical fitness and wellness management, she would like to teach physical education, but also wants to focus on the reading activities and after school programs that she has been part of as an AmeriCorps member. |
