USGS Scientists Featured in National News Segment on Investigating Broken Levees in New Orleans
U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) researchers Robert Kayen and Brian Collins were among the experts featured in a 10-minute television news feature about a multiagency investigation of the New Orleans levee failures after Hurricane Katrina. The segment aired on October 20, 2005, on the "News Hour with Jim Lehrer," a national Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) news program. Kayen is a research civil engineer in the USGS Western Coastal and Marine Geology Team (WCMG) whose professional interests include geotechnical earthquake engineering and slope stability. Collins recently joined WCMG as a USGS Mendenhall Postdoctoral Fellow, having completed a Ph.D. in geotechnical engineering and engineering geology at the University of California, Berkeley. The two scientists, stationed in Menlo Park, CA, worked in New Orleans from October 9 to 15 as part of a National Science Foundation investigative team brought in at the request of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to conduct an independent review of the levee system's design and performance.
