Research Project: APPLE MAGGOT HOST ATTRACTANTS

Location: Wapato, Washington

Project Number: 5352-22000-017-34
Project Type: Trust

Start Date: May 01, 2007
End Date: Dec 31, 2008

Objective:
The objective of this cooperative research proejct is to assess the relative attractiveness of hawthorn and apple fruit volatiles to Washington apple maggot flies and to develop an effective lure for these flies based on host fruit odors.

Approach:
The behavioral responses of flies to fruit volatile collections and synthetic blends will be measured in a flight tunnel. Flies will be individually transferred to a screen cage, which will then be placed on a stand 1 m downwind from a 3 inch diameter red plastic sphere baited with a particular fruit blend. Flies are responsive if they display flight over the 1 m distance to reach the source sphere. In field trapping tests, sticky red sphere traps with various volatile lures will be placed on hawthorn and apple trees. All flies will be removed and counted. Tests will begin in late June, July, or September and last at least 30 days. Documents Trust with WA TFRC. Logs 35114 & 32979.
