Research Project: CHEMICAL ECOLOGY OF PEAR PSYLLA

Location: Wapato, Washington

Project Number: 5352-22000-017-20
Project Type: Trust

Start Date: May 15, 2005
End Date: Dec 31, 2008

Objective:
Objectives of the study are to conduct behavioral assays aimed at demonstrating that pear psylla females emit volatile chemicals that attract mate-seeking males, isolate and identify the attractants, and eventually synthesize the attractant chemicals.

Approach:
Behavioral assays will be done using a Y-tube olfactometer to assess response by male psylla to competing sources of attractants. Volatiles will be collected from those females shown to be most attractive to males. Specific chemicals responsible for attracting males will then be isolated and identified using standard pheromone methodologies. Ultimate aims are to identify and synthesize volatiles that attract male pear psylla. Documents Trust with WTFRC. Log 29063.
