ASAM Recertification

Recertification for an ASAM Certified Physician is required every 10 years. When the process of certification began, physicians were awarded certificates that were not time-limited and therefore did not have to be renewed. In recognition of the pace of change in medical knowledge, a program of re-certification through a periodic process (every ten years) of credential review and further examination was established. Realizing that the Recertification process can assess how a physician is evolving his or her knowledge and skills after the initial certificate or re-certification is awarded, the ReCertification program was created in 1998 as the new gold standard.

Who must Recertify and How often
?

Certificates issued in 1998 and thereafter are time limited and will expire 10 years after the date of initial certification. After 10 years have passed, physicians not obtaining a recertification certificate will forfeit ASAM Certified status.

Certificates issued from 1986-1996 are not time limited and will not expire. However, all certified physicians are strongly encouraged to consider Recertification after ten years in order to demonstrate the currency of their knowledge in the field of Addiction Medicine
