The Consortium for Medical Fellowships in Alcoholism and Drug Abuse

The Consortium for Medical Fellowships in Alcoholism and Drug Abuse was established to promote fellowship training of high caliber by its primary sponsors, the American Academy of Psychiatrists in Alcoholism & Addictions, the Association for Medical Education and Research in Substance Abuse, and the American Society of Addiction Medicine. The goal of the Consortium is to assure the availability of clinical research and teaching specialists in the addiction field through well organized and effective training programs. Representatives of the following additional medical specialty organizations are sponsors as well: American Academy of Neurology; American Academy of Pediatrics; American Psychiatric Association; Society of General Internal Medicine; Society of Teachers of Family Medicine. Emory University’s Addiction Psychiatry Residency Program

One 1-Year Fellowship Available
Program Period: July 1, 2007, - June 30, 2008
Emory University’s Addiction Psychiatry Residency Program currently has one opening available for the 2007-2008 program. Residents will train at the Atlanta VA Medical Center and affiliated sites. Residents in our program receive direct supervision in evaluation and treatment of men and women of different ages, ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds with addictions to all major classes of addicting substances. Residents receive supervised training in performing patient evaluations, managing detoxification and rehabilitation, and in treating psychiatric comorbidities. They participate in clinical supervision and formal didactic training  of general psychiatry residents and medical students. Addiction Psychiatry residents also follow outpatients for individual psychotherapy and medication management.

We have assembled outstanding faculty to provide a comprehensive didactics experience, and lectures address neurobiology, diagnosis and treatment of all major classes of addicting substances, pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy, and related topics including public policy, ethics, and medications development. Emphasis is placed on those areas covered by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology examination and requirements of the ACGME. One day per week is protected time to allow for scholarly activity and research pursuits.

Addiction Psychiatrist Research Training Fellowship

We are seeking applicants for our NIDA-funded training program in translational addiction research.  The goal of our program is to appropriately prepare addiction psychiatrists embarking on combined clinical and research careers to engage in multidisciplinary research across the bench to bedside continuum. Trainees will conduct an original interdisciplinary research project involving preceptors from at least two out of four conceptual frameworks (psychiatry, neuroimaging, molecular medicine, and biomedical informatics). They will also complete the required didactics for the Masters of Science in Clinical Investigation.  Applicants who are board eligible in Addiction Psychiatry may enter directly into the 2-year research training program.  PGY-5 trainees may qualify for our ACGME-approved clinical training program which provides expertise in diagnosis and management of addiction in inpatient and outpatient settings, including a general hospital consultation service.

The Center for Medical Fellowships in Alcoholism and Drug Abuse

 The Center for Medical Fellowships in Alcoholism and Drug Abuse was established in 1987 under sponsorship of the American Academy of Psychiatrists in Alcoholism and Addictions and the Association for Medical Education in Substance Abuse to promote postgraduate medical training in the addictions. This goal is carried out by: (1) establishing training standards for medical training in the addictions, (2) disseminating information on existing postgraduate programs, and (3) promoting the establishment of new programs in qualified medical training centers. The Center draws on the expertise of its advisory group, leaders in education of medical specialists in alcohol and drug abuse. University of Wisconsin - Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship

We are pleased to offer a one-year clinical fellowship or two-year research fellowship in Addiction Psychiatry. This is a unique opportunity for fellows to develop skills in working with those suffering from substance use disorders and comorbid medical and psychiatric conditions, using a wide array of evidence-based pharmacological and psychotherapeutic treatments is provided. The primary sites are the Madison VA, NewStart, a community-based inpatient/outpatient drug and alcohol treatment program, and Madison Health Services, a methadone clinic.

The fellowship is open to 1-2 qualified candidates per year. Candidates must have completed an ACGME-certified psychiatry residency prior to entering the fellowship. The Department of Psychiatry offers a one-year fellowship in Addiction Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine. The University of Florida College of Medicine began offering a Fellowship in Addiction Medicine in 1992. American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) and American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry (AAP) Fellows participate in a wide range of academic activities including clinical and basic science research, medical education, and patient care clinics. Inpatient evaluation, inpatient and residential treatment, consults, forensics, laboratory testing, drug education and prevention are available and provide the basis for the applicant to sit for the ASAM or Psychiatry Addiction Boards, Pain and Medical Review Officer certifications. Fellows have come from psychiatry residencies as well as applicants with previous careers in anesthesiology, neurosurgery, family medicine, medicine, surgery, and pediatrics.

Postgraduate Year 1 Psychiatry Resident Training in Addiction Psychiatry
Currently, the PGY I Addiction Psychiatry training consists of a four-week rotation. This is part of a 3 month block of psychiatry training that also includes Emergency Psychiatry and Consult Liaison Psychiatry. The overall the focus is on the developmental needs of the Resident i.e. developing core competencies of understanding the basics of addiction medicine and psychiatry, how to manage acute states of intoxication and withdrawal, approaches to treatment (e.g. pharmacology and motivational enhancement techniques), and experiencing different settings for treatment intensity (e.g. withdrawal management units, day treatment programs, out-patient clinics etc). Exposure to the above with processing from supervisors will focus on developing professional attitudes and behaviours for dealing with addiction.

The Department of Psychiatry in association with Hazelden-Springbrook offers fully accredited fellowship position in Addiction Psychiatry. This one year program offers training at Hazelden-Springbrook, a residential and outpatient addictions program geared towards intensive treatment of professionals, OHSU, the Portland VAMC, and other community sites. The focus is on clinical skills development in chemical dependency diagnosis and treatment. Trainees are directly supervised by experienced staff at the treatment sites and OHSU faculty, all of whom are certified in Addiction Medicine (either through the American Society of Addiction Medicine or theAmerican Board of Psychiatry and Neurology). Clinical experience is supplemented with didactic and interactive teaching, and takes advantage of the wide range of expertise in other disciplines in the School of Medicine.There are opportunities for research in areas related to substance abuse spanning the basic and clinical sciences. Applicants must be board eligible or certified in Psychiatry. There may be additional positions for non-psychiatrists seeking to prepare for a career in Addiction Medicine through the American Society of Addiction Medicine. Potential applicants for these positions should contact the Department to determine if funding for these additonal stipends is available.

The fellow will participate in the diagnosis and treatment of all substance use and induced disorders in diverse settings. S/he will also receive didactic education in current biological, psychological, and social theories of addiction and will develop expertise in pharmacological treatment using buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, acamprosate, disulfiram, and other treatment options. Advanced clinical training takes place in specialized inpatient and outpatient settings at Mount Sinai and the Bronx VA. Fellows also receive experience in methadone maintenance and consultation-liaison addiction activities, including Mount Sinai’s Transplantation Institute, one of the nation’s largest such programs. The fellowship will provide opportunities for teaching and supervision of psychiatry residents and medical students. The optional second year of the fellowship will offer in-depth participation in research activities in addiction psychiatry.
