Today's action by the Senate reflects strong bipartisan agreement about the need for education reform and the means for achieving that reform. I would like to thank the Senate for their leadership in taking up debate on S.1 today and their interest in proceeding with S.1 without delay. Too many children have been lost already within a system of public education that has resisted change, despite a decade of historic spending at the federal, state and local levels that has failed to produce the kind of academic achievement that America expects. I look forward to the Senate debate and to the upcoming consideration of H.R.1 as we move ahead with reforming that system. This is truly an exciting time for America's students.
