Transportation and Technology Academy of Cardozo High School (TransTech) Began in 1991; Ongoing Work-readiness program. Operates from Cardozo Senior High School in Washington, D.C. Bridges gap between classroom and workplace through mentoring, summer internships, regular student work assignments, and career development activities. First transportation studies academy in the Washington area. FHWA became involved in 1994, when the FHWA Administrator signed the partnership agreement. DOT has been involved since 1993. Summer Transportation Institute (formerly National Summer Transportation Institute for Secondary School Students) Ongoing Summer training program. Features 4 to 5 weeks of instruction, SAT preparation, Life Management Seminars, field trips, and student projects. Stimulates interest in transportation industry. Ninth- and tenth-grade students who express interest in engineering, science, transportation, and technology careers are selected to participate.

Dwight David Eisenhower Transportation Fellowship Program (DDETFP) Developed in 1992; first fellowships were awarded in 1993; Ongoing Fellowship Program. Encompasses all areas of transportation to attract, enhance, and retain the top talent in transportation research and engineering professions. Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) and On-the-Job Training Supportive Services(OJTSS) Initiatives Ongoing Pre-apprenticeship program. Integral element of Federal-aid program. Through partnerships between state government and construction industry, includes numerous initiatives to increase the numbers of minorities and women in construction-related employment.

Urban Youth Corps Established in 1993; Ongoing Hands-on work program. More than 1,500 young people, ages 16 - 25, have participated in projects "for the rehabilitation, reclamation, or beautification of urban public housing and public works, and transportation resources or facilities." Includes landscaping, urban tree care, reforestation, facilities improvement, and restoration of historic sites. Gary Dickson

Summer Transportation Internship Program for Diverse Group (STIPDG) Ongoing
June - August Annually
Summer internship program. FHWA provides funding and has lead-agencyresponsibility to conduct a 10-week internship program in offices throughout theDOT. Students are selected from colleges and universities around the nation, andwhile working, gain exposure to a wide range of transportation-related experiencesin program offices in the Headquarters and the field.
