Objective:
Determine the efficacy of various alternatives to methyl bromide to control pathogen populations, weeds and nematodes in ornamental field soils under standard mulch and VIF. Determine efficacy of low molecular weight compounds for the post-plant control of soilborne diseases. Determine the effect of treatments on health and vigor of plants during the season and at haravest.
Approach:
Two trials will be conducted in calla lily rhizome nurseries with Golden State Bulb growers. Main plots will consist of preplant fumigant treatments iodomethane + chloropicrin (50:50), methyl bromide + chloropicrin (50:50), and water control. Metham sodium will be applied a week following the initial treatments. All treatments will be delivered by drip irrigation. Main plots will be split and each sub plot will be covered either by standard polyethylene mulch or VIF. The sub-sub plots will be post emergence treatments of 2-bromoethanol, dimethyl disulfide, iodomethane, furfural or water control. At least 2 post emergence treatments will be made during each of the 2 summers of the trial. Two other trials will be conducted with cut flower growers. Preplant treatments will consist of InLine, chloropicrin, iodomethane + chloropicrin, methyl bromide + chloropicrin, SEP-100 and propylene oxide and a control. All treatments will be followed by treatment with metham sodium a week after the initial treatment. Trials will be conducted with Hilltop Flowers in Carpinteria and Por La Mar in Golita and the trials will be planted stock.
