Research Project: MOBILE MATING DISRUPTION, THE STERILE INSECT TECHNIQUE AND ATTRACT AND KILL FOR AREAWIDE CONTROL OF LIGHT BROWN APPLE MOTH

Location: Tropical Plant Pests Research

Project Number: 5320-22430-021-18
Project Type: Reimbursable

Start Date: Dec 01, 2007
End Date: Nov 30, 2009

Objective:
1. Demonstrate concept of mobile mating disruption (MMD). 2. Determine the biological parameters for SIT in LBAM. 3. Assess the suitability of novel attract and kill formulations for LBAM. 4. Develop molecular markers to distinguish origin of LBAM populations.

Approach:
1. MMD - test ability of flies as carriers of LBAM pheromone and their ability to disrupt mating compared to conventional mating disruption methodology using laboratory and field cage bioassays and behavioral studies. 2. SIT - determine the optimal irradiation dose for sterilization of LBAM pupae and adults. Test ability of sterile LBAM males to interrupt normal egg laying of LBAM females and/or produce sterile eggs in laboratory and field cage assays. Develop suitable release strategies and methods for LBAM SIT. 3. Attract and kill - evaluate sprayable formulations of pheromone plus insecticide to kill LBAM males in the field. Assess formulations that will allow efficacy and longevity of formulations, Test in field plots against LBAM. 4. Utilize molecular techniques to determine point of origin of LBAM currently in california by comaring selected markes between populations in Australia, New Zealand and Hawaii.
