Boren Graduate Fellowships
http://www.borenawards.org/boren_fellowship
The National Security Education Program (NSEP) David L. Boren Graduate Fellowships enable U.S. graduate students to pursue specialization in area and language study or to add an international dimension to their education. Boren Fellowships support students pursuing the study of languages, cultures, and world regions that are critical to U.S. national security but are less frequently studied by U.S. graduate students, i.e., areas of the world other than Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. It is hoped that recipients of Boren Fellowships will comprise an ever-growing cadre of experts whose enriched educational and professional experiences will enable them to provide leadership and direction in our national commitment to economic growth, international peace and security, and the promotion of democracy abroad. The Academy for Educational Development (AED) considers it a distinct pleasure to serve as the administrative agent for this important program.

Fellowships and Financial Aid
http://www.cgsnet.org/Default.aspx?tabid=163
CGS does not offer any financial assistance for graduate students. We have, however, prepared this list of graduate fellowship opportunities for those entering graduate programs. It is by no means comprehensive, but it is provided to give basic information about some of the fellowships that might be available for graduate study.
There are many other sources of fellowships. Some are regional. Others are local. Community organizations like Rotary, Altrusa, Kiwanis, and the Optimist Club may also have very organized graduate scholarships for students from their communities. Graduate fellowships are frequently offered by college honor societies, fraternities, and sororities. Contact the national offices of organizations to which you belong to find out if you are eligible. Or discuss possibilities with a student affairs professional on your campus (dean of students, student activities director, or their staff members).

The Dissertation Proposal Development Fellowship (DPDF) is a strategic fellowship program designed to help graduate students in the humanities and social sciences formulate doctoral dissertation proposals that are intellectually pointed, amenable to completion in a reasonable time frame, and competitive in fellowship competitions. The program is organized around distinct “research fields,” subdisciplinary and interdisciplinary domains with common intellectual questions and styles of research. Each year, an SSRC Faculty Advisory Committee selects five fields proposed by pairs of research directors who are tenured professors at different doctoral degree-granting programs at U.S. universities. Research directors receive a stipend of $7500. Graduate students in the early phase of their research, generally 2nd and 3rd years, apply to one of five research fields led by the two directors; each group is made up of ten to twelve graduate students. Fellows participate in two workshops, one in the late spring that helps prepare them to undertake predissertation research on their topics; and one in the early fall, designed to help them synthesize their summer research and to draft proposals for dissertation funding. Fellows are eligible to apply for up to $5000 from SSRC to support predissertation research during the summer. The program is administered by the Social Science Research Council and funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

    Zonta International
    Amelia Earhart Fellowships
    http://www.zonta.org/
The Zonta International Foundation established this award to honor famed air pioneer and Zontian, Amelia Earhart. The award is for women who have completed at least one year of graduate study in an area of science or engineering which is closely related to advanced studies in the aerospace-related sciences. While often thought of as award just for those studying aerospace sciences, awards have been made for graduate study in such fields as aerospace, engineering, astronomy, astrophysics, biomedical engineering, computer science, fluid mechanics, geological oceanography, meteorology, molecular biology and space medicine. Therefore, this grant supports a wider range of study than commonly thought. Thirty-three to thirty-five grants of $6000 each are made yearly.

If you have access to the world wide web and are willing to fill in the online forms, this service promises a free customized list of financial aid sources. FastWeb is actually a searchable database of more than 400,000 private sector scholarships, fellowships, grants, and loans from more than 3,000 sources for all levels of higher education. First-time visitors have to register (first and last name and a user ID), then complete a profile, including background and fields of study. Registrants then receive a list of all currently relevant funding sources. The registration information is stored and can be used on subsequent visits. The entire sign-up process, and delivery of available funding sources, can be a bit tedious: about five to twenty minutes, depending on the connection speed. Approximately 500 new scholarships are added to the database daily, so registrants can stay current. Asking for Letters of Recommendation
    http://www.indiana.edu/~gradgrnt/asking-for-letters-of-recommendation.html
One of the most important aspects of a student’s application is the letter of recommendation. Depending on the grant or fellowship, a single applicant may need one to three letters that can attest to the strengths of both the student and his or her project. Strong letters of recommendation can be the decisive factor in whether or not a student receives funding and yet it is the part of the application over which a student has the least control. This web page provides a few tips to help you secure the strongest letters of recommendation possible. Advice from Dana Ohren, Indiana University's Graduate School Grad Grants Center.
