Aquatic Nuisance Species (ANS)
-
What are ANS?
Aquatic nuisance species (ANS) (sometimes called exotic, invasive, non-indigenous or non-native) are organisms that invade ecosystems beyond their natural, historic range. While some non-native or non-indigenous species are important sportfish here in the Great Lakes, many other may harm native ecosystems or commercial, agricultural, or recreational activities dependent on these ecosystems. They may even harm our health.
- How to Report a Sighting
- Call National Invasive Species Hotline 1-877-STOP-ANS (1-877-786-7267)
- Call your local state agency, Sea Grant office or the LGLFRO.
- Take a detailed picture if possible and note the exact location.
- Be sure to understand your federal and state laws since it is ILLEGAL to transport or possess certain species.
- Visit http://nas.er.usgs.gov/ (U.S. Geological Survey Nonindigenous Species Database) for more information on recent collections of ANS.
