School Characteristics and Policies Questionnaire

The School Characteristics and Policies Questionnaire, or simply the "school questionnaire," is given to the principal or another official of each school that participated in the current NAEP assessment. This questionnaire includes items about the characteristics of the school, school enrollment, absenteeism, drop-out rates, tracking policies, curriculum, testing practices and use, special priorities and school wide programs, availability of resources, special services, community services, policies for parental involvement, and school wide problems.

To reduce burden on the principal or school official, NAEP item developers cut the number of background questions in the school questionnaire by nearly 50 percent at each grade when designing the 2001 NAEP assessment:

  • The grade 4 questionnaire contained 22 questions in 2000 but only 10 questions in 2001.
  • The grade 8 questionnaire contained 24 questions in 2000 but only 10 questions in 2001.
  • The grade 12 questionnaire contained 26 questions in 2000 but only 13 questions in 2001.
