“The Heart of Development” profiled American volunteer Leslie Hawke and her work with Roma street children and their families in Bacau, Romania. The short film premiered at a USAID-hosted ceremony in New York City earlier this year, at which Ms. Hawke received the Bureau for Europe & Eurasia’s eighth Outstanding Citizen Achievement Citation. Ms. Hawke’s son, the Academy Award-nominated actor Ethan Hawke, narrated the piece which was produced in collaboration with Wild Blue Pictures, a video production facility based in Houston.

“The film has proven to be a valuable tool for both USAID and Ovidiu Rom [Ms. Hawke’s nonprofit organization] in terms of educating people about the plight of the Roma,” Brock D. Bierman, Chief of Staff for the USAID’s Bureau for Europe & Eurasia. “And, through a series of benefit and private screenings, Leslie has been able to raise much-needed support to her further her efforts.

The Annual AMA Crystal Awards are sponsored by the Houston chapter of the American Marketing Association. Each entry is judged by a national panel of marketing professionals who evaluate nominees on strategy, design, tactics and effectiveness.

The USAID Outstanding Achievement Citation recognizes and highlights volunteerism in an overseas development context. The purpose of the citation program is to increase public awareness of individuals and organizations that are working to further the mission of USAID in the United States and Abroad. Recipients are honored for achievements which have contributed to the realization of USAID’s mission to provide economic development and humanitarian assistance around the world. The tribute film is a cornerstone of the Bureau for Europe & Eurasia’s citation ceremony. Each video focuses on the volunteer service that has earned recognition and may be used by honorees to cultivate support for their work. To date, these films have helped raise hundreds of thousands of dollars collectively in direct and in-kind donations for recipient activities.
