SANTO DOMINGO, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC - U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Administrator Andrew S. Natsios met with President Hipolito Mejia of the Dominican Republic today and discussed methods to increase Dominican competitiveness in the global marketplace, as well as USAID's programs in the country.

After the 45-minute meeting, Administrator Natsios said, "I congratulated President Mejia on his leadership in moving quickly to develop a program to resolve the economic crisis with the assistance of the IMF, World Bank and Interamerican Development Bank. Free trade zones and positive growth in the tourism sector provide hope for a more positive future."

During his two day visit on July 22nd and 23rd, Natsios visited the Haitian-Dominican frontier region with the Dominican Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources, Frank Moya Pons. Natsios announced the signing of a $500,000 agreement with a Dominican non-governmental organization to work with communities on both sides of the border to help resolve mutual development problems. USAID also intends to fund the Pan American Development Foundation (a U.S.-based NGO) with approximately $3,250,000 over a five year period to work with communities along both sides of the border to better lives and protect the resources so vital to their futures.

Natsios also held discussions with the President of the Supreme Court, Dr. Jorge Subero Isa, at the National Judicial School where USAID funds judicial reform programs. In addition, Natsios toured and met with medical personnel at the Altagracia Maternal Hospital, where USAID funds a HIV/AIDS counseling and testing program.

USAID has conducted development programs in the Dominican Republic since 1962.

The U.S. Agency for International Development has provided economic and humanitarian assistance worldwide for more than 40 years.
