Washington, D.C. - Beth Paige took the oath of office today as the new U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Mission Director for Nepal. USAID Acting Deputy Administrator James Kunder presided over the ceremony and administered the oath.
As Mission Director for Nepal, Paige will be responsible for managing a wide range of programs, including conflict resolution, rule of law and human rights, elections and political process, civil society, health care, agricultural, and economic programs. The budget for these programs was more than $35 million in fiscal year 2007. USAID assistance plays an important role in Nepal's transition to peace and democracy after 11 years of violent conflict and allows the people of Nepal to see concrete benefits from the ongoing peace process.
Acting Deputy Administrator Kunder lauded Paige for being "passionate about excellence, consistently seeking to improve USAID's performance results." Kunder also praised Paige for "challenging staff, partners and counterparts to constantly seek new opportunities for partnerships and to improve USAID's program impact."
Prior to her appointment in Nepal, Paige served as Deputy Mission Director in Bangladesh and as Contracting Officer for the USAID missions in El Salvador, Kenya, Mali and Egypt. She has been with USAID for 18 years.
Paige received her bachelor's degree in political science and master's degree in agriculture from Southern Illinois University. Born in Iowa, she is currently a resident of Austin, Texas, and has three teenage children.
