WASHINGTON, DC - Today, the U.S Agency for International Development (USAID) announced it is providing $50,000 to Thailand through the Thailand Red Cross for the purchase and distribution of relief supplies to meet the basic needs of the affected communities in response to the damage caused by recent flooding.
Extensive flooding in northern Thailand during the week of May 22 has resulted in 51 deaths, 87 missing persons, and affected more than 100,000 residents, according to the Royal Thai Government (RTG). The flooding has destroyed homes, roads, bridges, and farmlands and led to the forced evacuation of more than 1,200 people. The most affected provinces are Nan, Lamphang, Phrae, Sukhothai, and Uttaradit. The RTG is providing emergency assistance to the affected provinces and has deployed Royal Thai military troops and assets to assist in the delivery of relief supplies. According to the Thai Red Cross, although flood waters continue to recede, emergency needs continue to exist in certain flooded areas.
USAID will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary.
