WASHINGTON, DC - Today, the U.S Agency for International Development (USAID) announced it is providing $50,000 to Colombia through the American Red Cross, in conjunction with the Colombian Red Cross, for the local purchase and distribution of relief supplies to meet the basic needs of the affected communities in response to the damage caused by on-going flooding.
Since the heavy rains and flooding began in January 2006, thousands of homes have been destroyed, roads and bridges have washed away, and thousands of families have been displaced across much of northeastern Colombia. According to the Government of Colombia (GOC), the flooding has caused 112 deaths, injured 212 persons, and affected 127,000 others, across 26 departments, or administrative regions. On May 5, the GOC declared the departments of Boyacá and Cundinamarca areas of "national calamity."
USAID will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary.
