Suriname - Floods

Map of Suriname

Regional Team: LAC

Disaster Declared: 05/09/06

Brief Description:
Heavy rains that began on May 1 caused several major rivers in the South and parts of the Central Amazonian Lowlands of Suriname to rapidly rise and submerge large areas. The flooding in remote interior areas of Suriname along the Upper Suriname, Saramacca, and Coeroeni Rivers, in the Departments of Sipaliwini and Brokopondo, displaced an estimated 22,000 people and affected a total population of approximately 37,000. On May 8, the Government of Suriname (GOS) declared the affected regions disaster areas and formally requested U.S. Government assistance on May 9.  According to the GOS, 100 percent of subsistence farms and nearly two-thirds of livestock and household goods and equipment were destroyed in the flooded zones.

On May 9, U.S. Chargé d’Affaires to Suriname Mary Beth Leonard issued a disaster declaration due to the magnitude of the damage caused by the flooding.  In response, OFDA provided $50,000 through the U.S. Embassy in Paramaribo to the Surinamese Red Cross for the local purchase of emergency relief supplies to meet the basic needs of the affected communities.
