WASHINGTON, DC - Dr. Patricia Kubow, assistant professor of education at Bowling
Green State University in Ohio, has been awarded the Outstanding Citizen Achievement
Award by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) for her work
fostering the professional development and democratic leadership of educators
and students around the world. Dr. Kent R. Hill, USAID Assistant Administrator
for Europe and Eurasia, presented Dr. Kubow with the award at a ceremony today
at the USAID headquarters in Washington, DC. USAID Administrator Andrew S.
Natsios and Assistant Administrator for Legislative and Public Affairs Edward
Fox also attended and made comments.
During the ceremony, Dr. Hill specifically cited Dr. Kubow’s participation
and contributions to projects in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union,
including a 1999 project in which she worked with local teachers and students,
faculty members of the University of Toledo and Lourdes College, and educators
and students from Hungary and Ukraine, to examine ways of teaching students
in those countries leadership skills to help shape their futures. As part of
this project Kubow traveled to Hungary to lead a democratic education and exchange
institute for 26 Hungarian and Ukrainian teachers to examine the role of citizens
in society and how classrooms can teach students the skills they need to shape
their futures.
Dr. Kubow was recognized by the White House in October 2002 for her advocacy
of democracy education around the world. Her current project “Education
for Democracy - Strengthening Civic Education through Curriculum Development
and Cultural Exchange in Kenya, South Africa, and the United States” seeks
to assist in the development of middle school-age curriculum materials dealing
with democratic institutions and practices.
“Dr. Kubow has worked at the very core of society’s needs helping
children learn more about their personal responsibilities and the need for
community service through democratic principles,” said Dr. Hill during
the ceremony today. “Because of her service and dedication she has helped
developing nations learn about democracy at all levels. Dr. Kubow is an exemplary
recipient of USAID’s Outstanding Citizen Achievement Award and we are
proud to have her receive our bureau’s top honor.”
Kubow received her doctorate from the University of Minnesota in 1996 with
an emphasis in comparative and international development education. In 1998
she received the Outstanding Dissertation Award in teaching and teacher education
from the American Educational Research Association.
USAID’s Outstanding Citizen Achievement Award recognizes volunteerism
in international development. USAID’s goal with this award is to increase
the public’s awareness of individuals and organizations that are working
to further the mission of USAID in the United States and abroad. Recipients
of this award are recognized for achievements that have contributed to the
realization of USAID’s mission to provide economic, development and humanitarian
assistance around the world.
