George Washington Carver Agricultural Excellence Award

“Vision gives rise to hope. Hope creates a desire to help others.” - George W. Carver

Nominations are due Friday, July 27, 2007
Nomination Package (pdf, 60kb)

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is requesting nominations for the 2006 George Washington Carver Agricultural Excellence Award (hereinafter called the GWC Award). The GWC Award is awarded annually to an individual, a unit, or team at a Minority Serving Institution (MSI), African university or research center in recognition of accomplishments in the field of agriculture that have helped to improve the quality of life for people in developing countries. This USAID award has been named after Dr. Carver, whose innovative, pioneering work in agriculture, while he was a scientist and educator at Tuskegee University, has resulted in agricultural products and processes that have enhanced the quality of life for people all over the world.

Minority Serving Institutions, and USAID Missions and Offices are being asked to review individuals, a unit, or teams at MSIs, African universities or research centers that are involved in USAID-funded activities in agriculture for possible nominations for the GWC Award. Please inform deans, international program directors, sponsored program directors, and/or principal investigators involved in USAID-funded agriculture-related activities over the past five years at your institution about the opportunity to be nominated by a USAID field mission for this award. You can also independently nominate candidates who qualify for the GWC Award. The award criteria are enclosed.

Plans are being made to present the USAID GWC Award during HBCU Week, 2006 in Washington, D.C. The USAID GWC award includes a medal to the awardee(s), a plaque will be presented to the institution of the individual, team, or group selected, and a $5,000 honorarium presented to the awardee.

Thank you for your institution's interest and participation in USAID-funded activities.
