Municipal Development Program is launched in the province of Cabinda

The Municipal Development Program was launched in the province of Cabinda on January 31 2007, at the Ministry of Finance. During the launch, Carol Thompson, U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Africa at the U.S. State Department, Eunice Carvalho, General Manager for Policy, Government and Public Affairs at Chevron, and João Mesquita, Vice-Governor of Cabinda, spoke about the importance of this program for Cabinda and Angola. ExxonMobil Foundation makes a second $1 million contribution to the PMI

Esso Exploration Angola, a subsidiary of ExxonMobil Foundation, announced a $1 million contribution to the USAID-led President's Malaria Initiative (PMI) at a ceremony that included Vice Minister of Health, Dr. José Van-Duném; Deputy Assistant Secretary for Africa at the U.S. State Department Carol Thompson; U.S. Ambassador Cynthia Efird; and James R. Riley, the Exxon Mobil Corporation's Manager for Government Relations and Public Affairs Business Support, on January 30, 2007. The $1 million contribution brings ExxonMobil's total contribution to the President's Malaria Initiative to $2 million since 2005. Read More

DAS Thompson announces emergency assistance donation and future launch of water partnership

Deputy Assistance Secretary Carol Thompson and U.S. Ambassador Cynthia G. Efird visited a school in the Municipality of Viana on January 30, where 28 families were seeking refuge as a result of being displaced due to the recent flooding caused by heavy rainfall. Ms. Thompson announced that the U.S. Government will support Angolan Government efforts to provide flood relief by donating USD $70,000. Read More

BFA and U.S. Ambassador inaugurate Huambo's Jango Juvenil

In a ceremony attended by Cynthia Efird, the U.S. Ambassador to Angola, together with Banco de Fomento Angola (BFA) President Dr. Emidio Pinheiro, the new Jango Juvenil (or youth center) in the municipality of Caala, Huambo, was officially inaugurated on January 25, 2007. In an energetic ceremony, speeches by the two, together with representatives of the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Municipal Administrator of Caala, were interspersed with musical performances by local youth. USAID/Angola facilitates Environmental Management Workshop for its implementing partners

Between January 15th and 19th, 2007, an Environmental Management and Regulation 216 Workshop was organized for USAID's implementing partners to enable and build partner organizations' capacity to monitor and apply mitigation measures where necessary in order to ensure compliance with USAID regulations, and reinforce and raise awareness with regards to the use of best practices and sound design of environmental activities. Although USAID/Angola does not have a specific environmental program, environmental considerations must be taken into account by their programs in order to avoid possible impacts on the environment. USAID and the Ministry of Health launched the Angola Malaria Indicators Survey at the Luanda Pediatric Hospital in Maianga under the auspices of the Ministry of Health. Increasing access to electricity in the Kilamba Kiaxi and Viana

USAID, in partnership with Banco de Fomento Angola (BFA) and in collaboration with the Empresa de Distribuição de Electricidade (EDEL), is promoting access to electricity in the Kilamba Kiaxi and Viana Municipalities of Luanda. USAID/Chevron Partnership Spurs Start-Up of a New Bank

In 2004, USAID and Chevron joined with others to help to establish NovoBanco, Angola's first and --thus far-- only bank dedicated exclusively to serving the financial needs of micro and small entrepreneurs and households. When USAID assistance ended in September 2006, Novo Banco had three branches (two in the capital province of Luanda and one in the coastal province of Benguela), 100 employees and plans for the future that include having 8 to 10 branches and 300 employees by 2008.
