Biography of Jane T. Dana
General Counsel
Jane T. Dana is the General Counsel of the U.S. Agency for International Development.
As General Counsel, she is responsible for providing legal advice to the Administrator and senior USAID staff in Washington and overseas to ensure that the USAID program is carried out according to the requirements of the law. The General counsel is a member of the Administrator's Senior Staff, and in addition to serving as the chief legal officer, she advises the Administrator on agency and policy matters.
Before joining USAID, Ms. Dana was the Deputy General Counsel for the Department of commerce for two and one-half years and also was Acting General Counsel for approximately 13 months. In that position, she advised the Department of Commerce on a broad range of domestic and international legal issues, including international trade, intellectual property rights, environment issues, export controls, telecommunications, electronic commerce, and technology.
Ms. Dana previously practiced law in Washington, D.C. at the firms of McGuire, Woods, Battle & Booth and Wilmer, Cutler, & Pickering. She also served as an attorney with the U.S. Department of State. She was a law clerk to the Hon. Leonard P. Moore on the U.S. court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.
A native of Columbia, South Carolina, Ms. Dana received a B.A. with Honors from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1975), where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. She received her J.D. from Columbia Uni-versity School of Law (1978), where she was a Harland Fiske Stone Scholar.
