Free Press in Emerging Democracies
Video on E&E's Independent Media
Program
Introduction
Since
1991, USAID has spent approximately $264 million to develop an independent,
professional media around the world. Approximately $180 million has been
spent in the Europe & Eurasia Bureau, where efforts have been focussed
on assisting with the development of financially viable private media. Independent
media have come a long way in Europe & Eurasia, most notably the critical
role they played in the smooth transition from autocratic to democratic rule
in Serbia. USAID's work in assisting the development of democracy in the
E&E region is contributing to the stabilization of communities in the
Balkans. USAID produced this video to show people the important role independent
media play in this transition process.
