WASHINGTON D.C. - The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) announced the swearing in of Cheryl Anderson as its new Mission Director to the East Africa Regional Mission in Nairobi, Kenya. Kenya Chargé d'Affaires, Ms. Leslie V. Rowe, administered the oath of office at the USAID Regional Mission in Nairobi, Kenya.

"Cheryl Anderson brings rich experience in the region and tremendous leadership talent to her new position," said outgoing USAID/East Africa Mission Director Andrew Sisson. "She was an exceptional deputy regional director and the ideal choice to take over as director. With her passion for Africa and her commitment to USAID, I'm confident she will be a superb regional director."

As Mission Director for USAID/East Africa, Anderson will manage a $65 million budget and carry out three regional mandates:

  • Lead a team of development experts who support USAID's programs in Eastern and Central Africa.
  • Manage regional programs to promote economic growth and integration, advance peace and stability, improve health, and fight HIV/AIDS.
  • Serve as the Director for USAID's limited-presence programs in Somalia, Burundi and Djibouti.

After serving as a Peace Corps volunteer in Ghana, Anderson joined USAID in 1988. She has served as Program Officer in Zaire and in the Sudan Field Office as well as Project Development Officer and Conflict Mitigation Team Leader at the USAID Regional Mission in Nairobi. Anderson also served as Deputy Director in the East Asia Office of the Asia and Near East Bureau in Washington D.C.

A native of New York, New York, Anderson received her bachelor's degree in International Relations from Colgate University in Hamilton, New York and a master's degree in International Development Management from American University in Washington, DC. She is married and has two daughters.
