Conference of Ministers of Health,
Agriculture/Livestock on Avian Influenza Control and
Pandemic Preparedness in Asia, New Delhi, July 27 -
28, 2006

Dr. Ramadoss,
Minister of Health, Government of India, takes
part in the traditional Lighting of the Lamp
at the beginning of the avian influenza
conference in New Delhi. The conference
brought together representatives of
Agriculture, Food, and Health from 13
different countries across Asia. Each country
had a chance to share their successes and
challenges in the control of Avian Influenza.

A representative
from the Food and Agriculture Organization,
delegates from India and Indonesia, and two
conference chairmen from India and Nepal
discuss combating Avian Influenza.
Representatives from Afghanistan, Bangladesh,
Bhutan, China, Korea, Maldives, Myanmar, Sri
Lanka, Thailand, as well as Timor-Leste also
attended. |

Representatives
from the U.S. Agency for International
Development India and U.S. Department of
Agriculture attending the conference. USAID
India and the U.S. Department of Health &
Human Services co-funded this conference as a
way to support the battle against Avian
Influenza. With the support of USAID and HHS
the main objectives of assessing the risk of
an avian pandemic, identifying a response, and
developing international relations for
effective action against the pandemic were
met. |

Country
representatives amending the proposal that is
to be known as the Delhi Declaration for Avian
Influenza. The declaration included possible
solutions to the pandemic as well as responses
to the potential large-scale outbreak. The
conference brought together the ideas of the
attending countries in order to develop a
regional approach to controlling Avian
Influenza. |
