WASHINGTON, D.C. - In response to the damage associated with Typhoon Xangsane in the Philippines, the U.S. Government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has provided $100,000 to the Philippine National Red Cross for essential relief supplies. Commodities such as blankets, mosquito nets, plastic mats, water containers, and soap will be purchased, enough to assist approximately 11,000 people affected by the floods and landslides.

From September 27 to September 28, Typhoon Xangsane (local name Milenyo) crossed over the Eastern Visayas and Central Luzon islands, including Manila, bringing heavy rains and sustained winds of up to 80 miles per hour. USAID/Philippines reports that the typhoon has killed at least 98 people, left over 80 people injured, and more than 70 residents missing. The Philippine Government reports that Typhoon Xangsane has displaced approximately 5,500 people. Rescue efforts have reportedly been hampered due to blocked roads, power shortages, and lack of adequate communications in the central Philippines.

On September 29, the U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines Kristie A. Kenney issued a disaster declaration due to the magnitude of the damage caused by Typhoon Xangsane. USAID will continue to monitor the situation and provide additional updates as necessary.
