Economic Growth: The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is working with the nations of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) to respond to the challenge of reshaping their economies to participate in trade liberalization. USAID's economic growth program works with the public and private sectors to diversify and produce goods and services conducive to trade and international business development. USAID assistance seeks to improve the capacity of firms to deliver goods and services consistent with international standards and help the region establish policy and legislative frameworks to support free trade and competition.

Environment: USAID's regional environmental program reflects the region's priority concern for sustainable livelihoods. It seeks to identify and act upon those environmental problems which are most closely linked to and underlie the economies and growth potential across the region. The program aims at improving environmental management by both public and private sector entities. Working closely with the public and private sectors, Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) and other donors, USAID seeks to:

  • Promote the use of best environmental management practices;
  • Define/reinforce sustainable tourism policies and complementary compliance measures and;
  • Strengthen the private sector's capacity to access financing for environmental programs.

Democracy: This program is geared to enhance court system efficiency and fairness in the Caribbean by improving the operating environment of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) courts through computerization and streamlined case-flow management; promoting technical assistance and training, a far-reaching use of alternative dispute resolution methods and insuring that court proceedings are recorded by trained professional reporters using automated means. The program also focuses on providing judicial and administrative training to judges, magistrates and court staffs. In addition, USAID will provide technical assistance to establish a new Caribbean Court of Justice to replace the Privy Council as the highest Court of Appeal and modernize the court registries in at least four Resident Magistrates Courts in Jamaica.

HIV/AIDS: This program enhances the Caribbean response to the HIV/AIDS crisis in target countries. USAID's focus is to increase NGOs and Community Based Organizations (CBOs) capacity to deliver prevention programs and increase government capacity to implement an effective response to HIV/AIDS in the region. USAID is working with the Caribbean Epidemiology Center on this program.
