USAID Mission Director to the Republic of Kenya Sworn In

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Katherine J. Almquist, U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Assistant Administrator for the Bureau for Africa, administered the oath of office to Erna Kerst as its new Mission Director to the Republic of Kenya.

As Mission Director to Kenya, Kerst will be responsible for managing health, economic growth, democracy and governance, peace and security, and humanitarian assistance programs worth more than $300 million. The goal of the USAID program in Kenya is to help establish a more stable democracy and a healthier, better educated population.

Most recently, Kerst served as Regional Director to USAID's Southern Africa Regional Mission based in Gaborone, Botswana. Prior to that, she served as Mission Director to USAID/Haiti from 2004 to 2006. Other assignments with USAID include Niger, Peru, Morocco, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Washington, D.C., as well as long-term training at the State Department's Senior Seminar. Kerst has been a Foreign Service Officer since 1983.
