USAID Provides Additional Food Assistance to Refugees in Zambia

WASHINGTON, DC - The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) announced today that it will donate an additional 2,000 metric tons (MT) of emergency food aid for refugees in Zambia.
The donation comes in response to an appeal by the World Food Program (WFP), which supplies food aid for about 75,000 refugees from Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo who live in camps and remote settlements in Zambia and rely on WFP for their basic food needs.
This latest donation continues the ongoing U.S. government efforts to provide basic support for refugees, in close coordination with the Government of Zambia and with United Nations agencies.
The value of the food donation is approximately $863,900 including the value of the emergency food, ocean and internal transport, storage and handling costs. This amount of food is enough to replenish the diminished WFP stock levels, enable WFP to reverse cuts in refugee rations, and avert further cuts for the next two months.
The United States is also participating in the current refugee-related Joint Assessment Mission organized by the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) and the World Food Program. In addition, USAID has donated approximately $63 million to respond to the current drought crisis and food insecurity situation in southern and western Zambia.
The United States Agency for International Development has operated a mission in Zambia since 1977. USAID/Zambia implements an annual budget of about $30 million focused on four key areas: agriculture and economic growth; basic education; integration of population, health and nutrition programs; and democracy and governance.
Celebrating 50 years in 2004, USAID's Food for Peace program has brought nourishment to more than 3 billion people in 150 countries.
The U.S. Agency for International Development has provided economic and humanitarian assistance worldwide for more than 40 years.
