International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI): USAID actively engages in ICRI, a partnership among governments, international organizations, and NGOs that aims to reduce the degradation of coral reef ecosystems. The Agency, along with the Department of State, serves as a co-chair of the International Working Group and leader on the U.S. Coral Reef Task Force.

National Invasive Species Council (NISC): USAID is a member of the NISC, an inter-departmental council that provides national leadership on invasive species and helps to coordinate and ensure complementary and effective federal activities against the proliferation of these species. A number of USAID Missions are already engaged in invasive species elimination programs directly contributing to the NISC efforts.

Lake Basin Management Initiative: USAID support to the Lake Basin Management Initiative has contributed to greater awareness of the importance of lakes and their freshwater resources and biodiversity in international fora and policy. In 2003, the Initiative organized sessions on lake basin management and biodiversity conservation at the World Water Forum in Japan.

Additional information about the World Water Forum is available here.

IUCN World Parks Congress on Protected Areas: USAID provided support to the Vth IUCN World Parks Congress on Protected Areas that convened in Durban, South Africa in September 2003. The Congress, organized every ten years by the IUCN - The World Conservation Union – assesses the state of protected areas, and defines the agenda for protected areas for the next decade.

Additional information abou the World Parks Congress is available at www.iucn.org/themes/wcpa/wpc2003/index.htm.
