AIDS Team Visits Russia for First Orientation

On July 11, 2005, the Presidential Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) interagency Team arrived in Russia for their first orientation visit. This trip was designed to brief the interagency team on the existing USG HIV/AIDS program in preparation for the October 2005 interagency PEPFAR policy delegation. The core team from the State Department’s Offices of the Global AIDS Coordinator and the European Bureau’s Coordinator’s Office, Department of Defense, and USAID/Russia, visited Moscow, Saratov, and St. Petersburg. In St. Petersburg, meetings were held with the Head of the Krasnogvardeiskiy District Health Committee as well as the Deputy Health Commissioner. Site visits included the City AIDS Center, hospice, and adolescent drug rehabilitation center. Several NGOs working with high-risk populations made presentations on drug use patterns, prostitution, and vulnerable street children.
