Primorskiy Kray Fights Human Trafficking

On August 30, the Primorskiy Kray administration and local NGOs, including the USAID-funded Path to Success! program partners, combined forces to host the “STOP Trafficking" Asia-Pacific International Forum. The goals of the Forum were to raise public awareness of human trafficking problems, to unite Asian-Pacific countries' activities in addressing the problem, and to work out specific anti-trafficking measures based on international best practices. Around 200 representatives from Kray administrations, law-enforcement bodies, medical and educational institutions, and local and international NGOs participated in the Forum.

Renowned actress Julia Ormond, a U.N. Goodwill Ambassador, emphasized the significant role that Primorskiy Kray’s civil society—and in particular Irina Belotserkovets, Director of the Center for the Prevention of Social Problems, and Path to Success! partner—plays in the fight against human trafficking. Ms. Belotserkovets' energy and dedication helped her and other NGO leaders convince local governments of the necessity of elevating human trafficking issues to the regional and international level.

The Forum resulted in concrete proposals to combat trafficking in the region including establishing a regional crisis center for victims, organizing a permanent interagency working group chaired by the Governor of Primorskiy Kray, and cooperation between law-enforcement bodies and NGOs.
