Irrigation Rehab to Expand Fruit Crops in Southern Azerbaijan
In June 2008, USAID hosted the inauguration of a newly-completed irrigation system rehabilitation project in Tazakand, Astara. More than 100 people, including residents from two neighboring communities, representatives from CHF International and Astara Excom, gathered to celebrate the Tazakand community on the successful completion of its third project under USAID’s CDA program.
The rehabilitation project was identified as a priority by the Tazakand Community Development Council (CDC) and accomplished with support from the USAID Community Development Activity (CDA) and contributions of local community members and the municipality. The collaborative effort addressed water supply problems that had been troubling the community for more than 15 years and resulted in improved irrigation water supply for and living conditions of 1,468 residents. Tazakand anticipates that better irrigation will enable villagers to expand their cultivation of unique fruit crops—feijoa, tangerine, lemon, kiwi, and other citrus fruits—which require extensive watering and boost economic growth and opportunities for the community. In fact, the celebratory ceremony was kicked off by a community member who turned on a tap at the end of the rehabilitated pipeline and watered the trees.
During the ceremony, the Tazakand CDC leader commended residents on their fruitful collaboration with USAID and CHF, emphasizing the value of the skills and knowledge for effective community mobilization, project planning, and implementation gained through CDA participation.
