First Parliamentarian Town Hall Meeting Gets Resounding Approval

In the first meeting of its kind in Jalilabad, community members recently had a chance to voice their concerns about development priorities to their parliamentary representative in an open and public town hall gathering.

The event, which was organized by CHF staff implementing USAID’s Community Development Activity, attracted over 70 residents from four villages in Jalilabad who turned out to meet Parliamentary Deputy Mir-Kazim Kazimov.

After an introductory speech by the Parliamentary Deputy, leaders from each community presented a summary of priority issues on agriculture, education, and healthcare. Kazimov responded to each issue raised, and then opened the floor to public comments where various citizens voiced their individual concerns. The most pressing issues expressed by citizens were problems related to wheat farming and government services related to seeds, technical knowledge, irrigation, finance, sale, and infrastructure. Citizens also raised questions about red tape within government. They asked Kazimov to accelerate and promote the implementation of various laws in the regions, such as fuel subsidies for farmers. Many participants focused on social infrastructure issues such as roads, fuel and medical care. One attendee asked about the State Oil Fund, stressing that the citizens have a right to know how the money is used and want more transparency.

The meeting concluded with resounding applause; as all involved expressed their satisfaction with the cordial and interactive meeting. Kazimov specifically requested that the attendees write to his office with specific issues like those discussed in the town hall meeting for action. USAID’s Community Development Activity will assist the citizens in following up with the discussion by helping them to direct their appeals to their elected officials.
