Azerbaijan Imports Irrigations Innovations from Israel

Twenty-three Azerbaijani nationals traveled to Israel March 4-18 to participate in a USAID-funded course, “Irrigation Systems for Intensive Crop Production,” delivered in collaboration with the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This was the first course of its kind organized specifically for Azerbaijani citizens. The training incorporated both theoretical and practical components, including site visits to farms and greenhouses which showcased the significant progress in Israeli agriculture and the potential for rural Azerbaijan. Participants learned practical ways to adapt some Israeli technologies and methodologies to Azerbaijan.

Armed with knowledge from the classroom lectures and impressed by the visits to agricultural plots, fields and greenhouses, the participants expressed eagerness to purchase irrigation systems for their lands back home. Some had the cash in hand and were frustrated to learn that they were not able to purchase a ready-made system. Now that the participants have returned to Azerbaijan they are doing the necessary preparation and hiring specialists to survey their lands, so that they may order an irrigation system tailor made in accordance with the topography and their specific needs.

Through this training, the participants met with world-renowned irrigation companies, such as Netafim and Arkal Co, and hope to attract their support for agricultural activities in Azerbaijan. In the coming months, the participants will disseminate lessons learned and install new irrigation systems to support the development of their agribusinesses.
