USAID Internships Help BiH Students Gain Research Experience

Too often, students emerge from their studies with an excellent education but no real world experience to offer potential employers. An internship can solve that problem by giving students both credit towards their studies and the professional skills employers are looking for.

USAID’s Tax Administration and Reform Activity (TARA) recently hired three student interns to research how government revenues are distributed throughout Bosnia-Herzegovina (BiH).

“We wanted to summarize data from different sources in one document. By tracking the data for several years, we will be able to see who benefits and who suffers when revenues go up or down,” explains Ana Jankovic, a project manager at TARA. The interns expressed surprise at the level of research involved and the need to combine data to reach conclusions.

Thanks to their hard work, however, the final product was a comprehensive picture of collected revenues that will hopefully help BiH to target its spending more efficiently.
