Repositioning in Action E-Bulletin

June 2006

The e-bulletin was developed to provide a forum for the exchange of information, experiences, and lessons learned as we work to improve sustainable access to quality family planning services and commodities.

Table of Contents

Reproductive Health Supplies Coalition: Working Group Updates

April 27 – 28, 2006 Meeting
UNFPA Headquarters, New York City

Marketing Development Approaches Working Group

The Marketing Development Approaches (MDA) Group is currently identifying manufacturers of generic hormonals that meet international manufacturing and drug quality standards. As part of this initiative, the World Health Organization (WHO) will soon begin the process of pre-qualifying manufacturers of hormonal contraceptives. The WHO is expected to announce the process in the next few weeks. This is an exciting development as quality generic products have the potential to significantly reduce the cost of contraceptives.

Systems Strengthening Working Group

The Systems Strengthening Working Group is currently working on ways to improve the reliability and efficiency of contraceptive supply to country programs. Three priorities are the Countries-at-Risk Group (a small group of donors aimed at identifying and finding solutions to emergency supply shortages); implementation of the second phase of the Reproductive Health Interchange (a Web-based tool to support improved management of inbound supplies to countries and better coordination among government managers, program managers, donors, and procurers); and further analysis of regional/global mechanisms to mobilize additional resources for reproductive health (RH) commodities and to improve efficiencies in RH commodity financing and procurement.

Resource Mobilization and Awareness Working Group

The Resource Mobilization and Awareness Working Group is gathering together available advocacy materials on reproductive health supplies issues and, where possible, using these materials, will prepare a prototype advocacy package for use at the country level for review by key RHSC members at the time of the next RHSC meeting in October 2006.The package will serve as a basis for coordinated in-country advocacy work in yet-to-be-selected countries by coalition and other partners.

Disease Control Priorities Project

The Disease Control Priorities Project (DCP2) offers priorities for action that will help people in developing countries live healthier, longer lives. DCP2 offers tools to:

  • Help countries chose the best health investments
  • Recommend health buys that are highly cost-effective in many settings
  • Suggest changes to infrastructure to maximize results
  • Show how improving health is possible even where infrastructure is weak

Countries do not have to be rich in order to be healthy. Given today's tools and resources, much better health should and can be the norm.

Coming Soon: USAID is currently working with the Population Reference Bureau's BRIDGE Project on an analysis of DCP2 and the connection to family planning. There will be more information to disseminate over the next few months.
