New USAID Mission Director for Uganda Sworn In

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) announced today the swearing in of David Eckerson as its new Mission Director for Uganda. Administrator Henrietta H. Fore presided at the event and administered the oath to Mr. Eckerson.

"Uganda is one of the United States' most valued partners, and benefits from one of the largest USG foreign assistance programs in the world. We can only afford to send our best and brightest to Uganda, and I can say with confidence that David Eckerson is truly one of our best and brightest," said Administrator Fore.

As Mission Director for Uganda, Eckerson will oversee a program exceeding $300 million annually. USAID/Uganda provides assistance in the areas of conflict mitigation, democracy, governance, economic growth, agriculture, and environment; health, education and HIV/AIDS; and food aid and humanitarian assistance.

A member of the U.S. Foreign Service, Eckerson has previously served as USAID's Director of the Office of Human Resources and the Office of Strategic and Program Planning. He also served as Deputy Mission Director in Ethiopia, and Deputy Director in the Office of Caribbean Affairs. Eckerson began his career at USAID through the International Development Intern program in the late 1980s where he served in Haiti.

Prior to joining USAID in 1987, Eckerson worked as a Public Health and Nutrition Advisor with the USAID Africa Bureau, the TransCentury Corporation, and the Ministry of Planning in Yaounde, Cameroon. In the early 1970s, Eckerson served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Burkina Faso.

A native of Syracuse, New York, Eckerson obtained his undergraduate degree in Political Science and History from Hiram College and his M.A. in Culture and Values in Religion from Christian Theological Seminary. Eckerson is married and has three children.
