    General Environment

  • EarthPrint - was launched in 1999 as the official online bookshop of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Since then, other prominent international organizations have joined this initiative to provide a central location where authoritative environmental publications are available. EarthPrint currently offers publications from: The World Health Organization, United Nations University, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, Tata Energy Research Institute, and International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection.
  • East Asia and Pacific Environmental Initiative (EAPEI)
  • Ambio - The journal is a nonprofit publication of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. AMBIO addresses the scientific, social, economic, and cultural factors that influence the condition of the human environment. It is widely recognized as an important international forum for debate on these issues.
  • Admi-Net - AdmiNet aims to become a Cyber-Documentation Center delivering general information about governmental authorities and public services. Virtually all countries have an entry on Admi-Net, and most of them include a list of websites with additional information.
  • FAO Statistical Databases - Rapid access to summary statistics on most countries.
  • WRI's Earth Trends - Includes country-level data about sustainable development and the environment. Information is organized into the following ten categories: coastal and marine ecosystems; water resources and freshwater ecosystems; climate and atmosphere; population, health and human well-being; economics, business and the environment; energy and resources; biodiversity and protected areas; agriculture and food; forests and grasslands; and environmental governance and institutions.
  • Committee for the National Institute for the Environment - As part of its mandate, this US organization exists to communicate information through an electronic "National Library for the Environment".
  • UNEP Interactive Web Site - UNEP has launched a new interactive environmental web site (http://www.unep.net/) that will provide an expanded series of environmental management solutions. The network portal will offer a forum for scientific, technical peer review; provision of insights on environmental issues to the global community; and exchange of ideas, information and data.

  • The Wellbeing of Nations: A Country-by-Country Index of Quality of Life and the Environment
  • "Our Future, Our Environment" (a collection of essays, including one on international policy, assembled by the Rand Corporation)
  • FRAME. A USAID Africa Bureau activity supporting a FRAMEwork for the strategic analysis of environmental issues in Africa, including the environmental investments of USAID and others. FRAME facilitates the use of up-to-date information by environment and natural resource management professionals in Africa.
  • Enterprise Works Worldwide
  • The Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF) aims to advance biodiversity conservation projects in critical ecosystems that harbor the richest variety of life.
  • FOUNDATIONS OF SUCCESS helps conservation practitioners use adaptive management. Adaptive management incorporates research into conservation action. Specifically, it is the integration of design, management, and monitoring to systematically test assumptions in order to be able to adapt and learn.
  • The Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN) is a center within the Earth Institute at Columbia University. CIESIN works at the intersection of the social, natural, and information sciences, and specializes in on-line data and information management, spatial data integration and training, and interdisciplinary research related to human interactions in the environment.
  • "A Better Future" is a public communication campaign to raise public awareness and promote societal movement toward more sustainable lifestyles. Helping the public from all walks of life better appreciate the scientific issues that underlie progress on global sustainability is at the heart of this campaign. The many resources and identified organizations on the web site will assist you in developing mutual understanding and collective action that can create a better future for all.
  • Sustainable Rural Development Information System: Library of internet-based information resources supported by World Bank, CIESEN, CGIAR, UNEP, UNDP and FAO.
  • The Directory of Development Organizations 2003 is a compilation of contact data of the main sources of assistance available for private sector development (micro, small an medium-sized enterprises) and poverty reduction. A wide range of organizations is included in the Directory: international organizations, government ministries, private sector institutions, development agencies, universities, research and training institutes, NGOs/PDOs, grantmakers, banks, microfinance institutions, and development consulting firms. These organizations promote both private sector development and poverty alleviation, through: the financial sector and microfinance, trade and business development services, rural development and appropriate technology, small enterprise development and policy reforms, community development and social protection, gender and participation, environment and health, research, training and education.
  • Earth Summit 2002: Building Partnerships for Sustainability
  • International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) providees the World Summit on Sustainable Development Linkages
  • The Pacific Institute for Studies in Development, Environment, and Security is an independent, non-profit center created in 1987 to conduct research and policy analysis in the areas of environment, sustainable development, and international security. Underlying all of the Institute's work is the recognition that the pressing problems of environmental degradation, regional and global poverty, and political tension and conflict are fundamentally interrelated, and that long-term solutions require an interdisciplinary perspective.
  • Pacific Environment protects the living environment of the Pacific Rim by strengthening democracy, supporting grassroots activism, empowering communities, and redefining international policies.
  • Ecology and Society (formerly Conservation Ecology) is an electronic, peer-reviewed, multi-disciplinary journal devoted to the rapid dissemination of current research. The journal seeks papers that are novel, integrative and written in a way that is accessible to a wide audience that includes an array of disciplines from the natural sciences, social sciences, and the humanities concerned with the relationship between society and the life-supporting ecosystems on which human wellbeing ultimately depends.
  • Terralingua supports the integrated protection, maintenance and restoration of the world's biological, cultural, and linguistic diversity -- known as biocultural diversity -- by creating innovative tools to analyze the links between these diversities and demonstrate their global significance.

  • The Office of Arid Lands Studies (OALS) is a multidisciplinary teaching, research, and information unit in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at the University of Arizona in Tucson. The Arid Lands Newsletters - the newsletters from the University of Arizona are rich sources of information on dry land-related issues. Examples include desertification, the Convention on Desertification, and ecotourism in dryland areas.
  • Earth Trends is a searchable database by the World Resources Institute of over 400 variables for 210 countries, plus maps and sector-specific country profiles.

    International Conventions

  • Convention on Wetlands (The Ramsar Convention), 1971
    Contracting parties (countries) undertake to use wisely all wetland resources under their jurisdiction and to designate for conservation at least one wetland of international importance.
  • World Heritage Convention, 1972
    All states have the obligation to protect their unique natural and cultural areas. The international community has the obligation to help pay for them.
  • CITES Convention, 1975
    Over the past 25 years the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) has been regulating international trade of all species listed in its Appendices.
  • Convention on Migratory Species, 1979
    In force since 1983, the Convention, also known as the Bonn Convention, obligates parties to protect endangered migratory species and to set agreements for the conservation of vulnerable species that are not yet endangered.
  • FAO International Undertaking on Plant Genetic Resources, 1983
    This voluntary agreement among nations is based on the principle that plant genetic resources are the common heritage of humankind. It's in this agreement that "Farmers Rights" have been recognised, as a compensation for their contribution to the selection and conservation of genetic diversity of crops and livestock.
  • United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, 1992
    In this international treaty, governments agreed work towards stabilisation of greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that would prevent dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system. One important commitment for developed countries was the goal of returning to 1990 levels of emissions of greenhouse gases by the year 2000.
  • Convention on Biological Diversity, 1992
    At the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, world leaders agreed on a comprehensive strategy for "sustainable development" -- meeting our needs while ensuring that we leave a healthy and viable world for future generations. One of the key agreements adopted at Rio was the Convention on Biological Diversity. The world's governments set out commitments for maintaining the world's ecological foundations as we go about the business of economic development. The Convention establishes three main goals: the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components, and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits from the use of genetic resources.
  • United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), 1992
    The Earth Summit, as UNCED was also known, was convened in 1992 to address urgent problems of environmental protection and socio-economic development. The assembled leaders signed the Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Convention on Biological Diversity; endorsed the Rio Declaration and the Forest Principles; and adopted Agenda 21, a 300-page plan for achieving sustainable development in the 21st century. The United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD) was created in December 1992 to ensure effective follow-up of UNCED; to monitor and report on implementation of the Earth Summit agreements at the local, national, regional and international levels. The CSD is a functional commission of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), with 53 members.
  • Convention to Combat Desertification (CCD), 1994
    Created after the recommendations from the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development over 110 governments have signed the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification. It aims to promote effective action through innovative local programs and supportive international partnerships. Countries affected by desertification will implement the Convention by developing and carrying out national, sub-regional, and regional action programs.

  • The East Asia and Pacific Environmental Initiative (EAPEI) addresses critical environmental challenges and opportunities in East Asia and the Pacific in the areas of forest resources management and coastal and marine resources management. The EAPEI works to compliment other US government investment in the region by supporting transboundary, cross-border and regional activities and institutions and by supporting activities in USAID non-presence countries.

  • The Environmental Assessment Capacity Building (ENCAP) website serves as a knowledge archive and mechanism for facilitating future training and for improving environmental reviews in the region. The ENCAP site houses the "Environmental Guidelines for Small Scale Activities in Africa" and other environmental guideline documents, the complete set of materials for the five-day ENCAP courses, all the AFR environmental examinations from 1996 to present in a searchable archive, and a list of courses conducted. ENCAP is a USAID cooperative program to build environmental assessment and environmentally sound design capacity in Africa. The focus is small scale development activities. They conduct training, develop resource materials, and directly support the professional development of African EIA practitioners.

  • Fiscal Year 2005 USAID Budget Justification USAID works with developing nations and countries in transition to foster economic growth and provide humanitarian assistance. The Fiscal Year 2001 Budget Justification provides a detailed description and justification for the President's funding request for USAID's foreign assistance programs.
  • The USAID Library serves as a point of access to the body of knowledge relating to sustainable development and USAID information for individuals interested in the field of international development. With a particular focus on international sustainable development and economic assistance, the library's collection supports USAID's development efforts in its strategic objective areas: democracy and governance; economic growth; education and training; environment and agriculture; humanitarian assistance; and population, health, and nutrition.   • The Development Experience Clearinghouse (DEC) is the largest online resource for USAID funded, international development documentation. You are able to download USAID documents from our DEXS database that contains records for over 119,000 USAID technical and program documents with over 14,000 available for electronic download. The purpose of the DEC is to strengthen USAID's development projects, activities, and programs by making these development experience documents available to USAID offices and mission staff, PVO's, NGO's, universities and research institutions, developing countries, and the public worldwide. Agency contractors and grantees are required to submit USAID-funded documentation to the Clearinghouse for possible inclusion in the DEXS. See the Clearinghouse's web site for more information on the kinds of documents you may be required to submit and how to send them to the DEC.
