Attention Federal Employees!
Windy
City Kids Child Development Center has been operating since April 1999. It is a high
quality, comprehensive and affordable child development program for
children ages six weeks to five years. Windy City Kids’ goal is to provide a full-day child development
program for all children, regardless of their need, to achieve
independence, dignity and self-sufficiency. The program is located in the Harold Washington Social Security
Center (HWSSC), 600 W. Madison St., in Chicago. Easter
Seals has a five-year contract with the Employee Association at the HWSSC
to manage their full-day child development program.
Program Update
-
Windy
City Kids currently serves 74 children between the ages of six weeks
and five years. The target is for at least fifty percent of enrollment
to be children of federal employees.
-
Windy City Kids was recently granted
accreditation by the National Association for the Education of Young
Children (NAEYC). This prestigious recognition has been achieved by only
7% of early childhood programs nationwide. NAEYC accreditation is a
rigorous, voluntary process by which early childhood programs demonstrate
that they meet national standards of excellence.
- Community
outings have included Lincoln Park Zoo, Shedd Aquarium, Garfield
Conservatory, Kiddleland, Grant Park, Navy Pier, which were funded by
mini-grants from the HWSSC Employee Association.
- An
annual graduation is held for children who turn five years of age.
- The
Center participated in “The Cost of High Quality Child Care in
Chicago Study”, facilitated by the McCormick Tribune Foundation.
- Windy
City Kids paired with the Chicago Public Schools – State
Pre-Kindergarten Subcontracting Partnership, which will help the
program assist children with a smooth transition into kindergarten.
- The
children have appeared in a number of media events with the Easter
Seals National office and the Accessibility at Your Library program.
-
In October of 2002, The Commission on Accreditation
of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) announced that Easter Seals
Metropolitan Chicago has been accredited for a period of three years. An
organization receiving a three-year accreditation outcome has put itself
through a rigorous peer review process and has demonstrated to a team of
surveyors during an on-site visit that its programs and services are of
the highest quality, measurable and accountable.
