1st Annual SAMHSA Recovery Month Fun Walk/Run - SAMHSA Sponsored
Description

National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month (Recovery Month) is an annual observance, now in its 17th year, that takes place in September throughout the country. Recovery Month serves to educate the public that substance abuse is a national health crisis, that addiction is a treatable disease, and that recovery is possible. Recovery Month highlights the benefits of treatment for not only the affected individual, but for their family, friends, workplace, and society as a whole. Recovery Month also honors individuals in recovery and acknowledges the valuable contributions of treatment providers and supporters in the lives of people recovering from substance abuse.

Recovery Month is a nationwide event that engages national organizations and local communities to host recovery-focused activities. These activities have resulted in positive media exposure and growing support for addiction and recovery issues. This support comes from elected officials, policymakers, education leaders, judges, health providers, and the faith community. Each year, SAMHSA sponsors local events throughout the country. On September 27, 2006, SAMHSA will host its 1st Annual SAMHSA Recovery Month Fun Walk/Run at 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. All SAMHSA staff and contractors are invited to participate, subject to supervisory permission.
