Technical Abstract: North America has been dealing with the consequences of the introduction of West Nile virus since it was first discovered in New York City in 1999. Currently there are numerous other vector-borne pathogens that occur in various parts of the world that could be introduced into North America and become the second generation of emerging diseases that we must prepare for. This symposium will discuss (1) the ecology of some of the possible vector-borne diseases that are important in other regions of the world, (2) evaluate the potential for the diseases to either cause human or animal disease or become established in North America, and (3) assess ways in which we need to prepare.
