Flooding, 10/01/2007
Heavy rainfall starting in July caused flooding across Mali, particularly in the regions of Kayes, Koulikoro, Segou, Mopti, Sikasso, and Gao. The Government of Mali (GOM) reported that the flooding killed 9 people and affected more than 42,000 others. The floods also caused the collapse of nearly 5,000 houses, many of which were made of mud brick, as well as damaged roads, washed away bridges, destroyed crops, and contaminated wells. Displaced families sought shelter in schools for several weeks, causing GOM officials to postpone the start of the school year from September 17 to October 2 countrywide.
On October 1, 2007, U.S. Ambassador Terrence P. McCulley declared a disaster due to the effects of the flooding in Mali. In response, OFDA provided $50,000 through USAID/Mali to Catholic Relief Services (CRS) to decontaminate wells and provide food to host families who are sheltering displaced persons formerly living in schools.
