Brief Summary: The Collaborative on Healthy Air was developed to improve indoor air quality in the homes of older adults in West Oakland affected by diesel pollution. The project will use an existing information system to identify residences at high risk for exposure to diesel exhaust. The group will then recruit older adults in West Oakland to participate in the study. Particulate matter in indoor air in 10-20 West Oakland homes will be measured. The residents will be provided with a HEPA filter and other potential interventions and air sampling will be conducted after these interventions.
Environmental outcomes: The project will improve the indoor environments and health status of older adult residents in West Oakland, CA. The project also will improve the outdoor environment and health of all residents living in West Oakland who are exposed to diesel exhaust and toxic air pollutants. An evaluation will be conducted on options to improve indoor and outdoor air quality through development of green barriers using in-home filtration.
