Jonathan J. Halvorson

Soil Scientist

Dr. Jonathan J. Halvorson

Dr. Jonathan J. Halvorson completed his undergraduate work in agriculture at the University of Arizona and received his M.S. in Environmental Science and Ph.D. in Botany from Washington State University. He has been a research soil scientist at the USDA-ARS Appalachian Farming Systems Research Center near Beckley WV since 2000. He conducts integrative (biological, chemical and physical) research in soil science, with an emphasis on plant-soil organic matter transformations, reactions among abiotic and biotic soil fractions and processes associated with root function. He is interested in the role of plant-derived chemicals on soil function including the inhibition of seed germination and early development by tree leaf litter extracts and has recently begun studies to understand the role of tannins on soil microbial activity and organic matter formation.
