Supporting the Iraqi People in their Historic Elections
The Iraqi people went to polls last weekend in their first free national elections in generations and USAID played a key role in delivering support to the Iraqi people in their efforts to make this historic moment a resounding success. The election support team included the mobilization of thousands of Iraqi election staff, many hundred Iraqi civil society organizations and various international partners and experts with decades of experience in transitional elections support worldwide. USAID will continue to support Iraq's Election Commission and Transitional government in their remarkable efforts to consolidate Iraq's evolving democracy.
Two cooperative agreements, implemented at the request of the Independent Election Commission of Iraq (IECI), provided an institutional framework for Iraqi and international organizations to field domestic election observers, deliver voter education and implement conflict mitigation programs. The agreements support the IECI's administration of the full transitional election cycle, which includes the January 2005 elections, the October 2005 Constitutional Referendum, and the December 2005 National Assembly Elections.
